Five Istanbul nights and a road through older worlds
Türkiye moves through radically different atmospheres without becoming frantic: five ferry-and-mosque days in Istanbul, four nights among Cappadocia’s volcanic valleys, three by Antalya’s Mediterranean old town and three in Selçuk for Ephesus and the Aegean interior.
This is the strongest value-to-variety journey in the set. The internal flights and one domestic road segment need discipline, but four substantial bases keep it human. Pamukkale is optional from Selçuk; it should never displace Ephesus or turn the trip into a string of predawn transfers.

5 nights
Istanbul
Five days to cross the water repeatedly
Istanbul is treated as a city of shores and neighbourhoods, not a queue of domes. Sultanahmet gets one focused day; the Golden Horn, Bosphorus, Asian side and Beyoğlu each get room after it. Ferries are both transport and the clearest way to understand the city’s geography.
Best base
Karaköy or the Galata edge for ferries and evenings; Sirkeci for easier old-city monuments. Avoid a cheap room that requires steep, dark walks with luggage.
Arriving
Use the official airport bus or a pre-booked transfer from IST. Traffic can double the journey time, so the arrival day stays deliberately empty.
Moving on
Fly from the correct Istanbul airport to Kayseri or Nevşehir. IST and SAW are not interchangeable; build a generous road buffer.
Expected weather
About 11–19°C with rain, grey spells and Bosphorus wind. Ferries may feel several degrees colder.
Getting around
Istanbulkart, tram, metro and ferry. Walk one neighbourhood cluster at a time and avoid peak-hour taxis.
Vegetarian reality
Dedicated vegan restaurants are easy. Confirm meat stock in lentil soup and rice, egg in pastry glaze, and fish components in meze.
What makes the cut
Sultanahmet in one morning
Süleymaniye and the Golden Horn
Bosphorus ferry
Kadıköy and Beyoğlu
Reserve ahead
Basilica Cistern or any timed museum, plus the domestic flight. Mosques remain respectful, flexible visits around prayer.

4 nights
Cappadocia
Valleys first, balloon second
Four nights protect Cappadocia from the common mistake of making balloon flight the whole destination. The core is walking among volcanic valleys, cave churches and village edges. A cancelled balloon becomes extra sleep and morning light, not a ruined trip.
Best base
Göreme for walkability and tour pickup; Uçhisar for views and calm. Confirm heating, stair count, ventilation and whether the ‘cave’ room has an external window.
Arriving
Pre-book a shared transfer from Kayseri or Nevşehir using the actual flight number and hotel address.
Moving on
Fly to Antalya if the timetable is humane. If not, use a daytime bus or private transfer rather than a fragile overnight connection.
Expected weather
Roughly 0–15°C, with freezing dawns, possible snow and frequent balloon cancellation due to wind.
Getting around
Walk conservatively, use small tours for distant valleys and underground cities, and never enter unsigned terrain in poor visibility.
Vegetarian reality
Message the cave hotel before arrival. Carry lunch on tours and show the Turkish no-stock/no-egg card.
What makes the cut
Rose and Red Valleys
Göreme Open-Air Museum
One underground city
Optional balloon with zero emotional dependence
Reserve ahead
Hotel, airport transfer and a refundable balloon slot if desired. A reputable small-group valley or underground-city guide adds more value.

3 nights
Antalya
Mediterranean warmth and a lower pulse
Antalya is the climate reset between cold Cappadocia and the Aegean archaeological finish. One old-town day and one Roman-history day are enough. The route avoids a resort detour and uses Kaleiçi as a living city base.
Best base
Kaleiçi edge: close enough for atmosphere but accessible by taxi without carrying luggage over long stretches of cobble.
Arriving
Airport tram or a booked transfer; if arriving by bus, use a taxi from the otogar rather than dragging bags across town.
Moving on
Daytime bus or private transfer to Selçuk. A flight via Istanbul is rarely worth the geographic backtracking.
Expected weather
About 14–25°C, usually mild but capable of intense Mediterranean rain.
Getting around
Walk the old town, use tram and taxi for the museum, and take a guided car excursion for Perge/Aspendos.
Vegetarian reality
Good vegan options in the modern city. Kaleiçi tourist menus need explicit stock and egg checks.
What makes the cut
Hadrian’s Gate
Old harbour
Antalya Museum
Perge or Aspendos
Reserve ahead
One archaeology guide if desired; otherwise no major advance commitment.

Selçuk & Ephesus
The archaeological finale at opening-hour pace
Sleeping in Selçuk turns Ephesus from an excursion into the first, quiet part of a morning. The second full day belongs to Şirince by default; Pamukkale is offered only if weather, energy and the long return make sense.
Best base
Near the old centre and station for restaurants, İzmir rail and a short taxi to Ephesus.
Arriving
Reach Selçuk by daytime coach or transfer from Antalya. Walk only after checking in; the drive is already the day’s work.
Moving on
Use the train or transfer to İzmir Airport, fly to Istanbul and stay by the operating international airport.
Expected weather
About 10–22°C, pleasant for ruins but with rain and early sunset possible.
Getting around
Taxi to Ephesus upper gate and walk down, or use a small guided transfer. Minibus to Şirince.
Vegetarian reality
Reserve one restaurant each night; village cooking can rely on meat stock even when the visible ingredients are vegetables.
What makes the cut
Ephesus at opening
Terrace Houses
Selçuk museum and Basilica
Şirince or conditional Pamukkale
Reserve ahead
Ephesus official entry and Terrace Houses if open, İzmir flight, and any Pamukkale tour only at the last responsible moment.

Istanbul Airport Buffer
The unromantic night that protects the trip home
A 06:30 departure cannot safely follow a late domestic arrival and a cross-city transfer. The airport night separates those risks and turns the final morning into a simple shuttle.
Best base
At or near the exact operating airport, with a 24-hour shuttle whose pickup instructions are written.
Arriving
Fly İzmir to Istanbul early enough to absorb delay, collect all bags and check in before dinner.
Moving on
Use the pre-arranged shuttle around three hours before the international departure.
Expected weather
Cool and possibly wet; almost all movement is indoors.
Getting around
Hotel shuttle only.
Vegetarian reality
Eat before leaving the terminal or confirm the hotel kitchen’s no-egg option.
What makes the cut
A full sleep block
Repacked bags
No cross-city predawn gamble
Protected flight home
Reserve ahead
Correct-airport hotel, shuttle and baggage allowance.

This route spans three climates. Istanbul is maritime and moody, Cappadocia is already capable of frost or snow, and Antalya plus the Aegean can still deliver gentle outdoor afternoons. Shorter daylight makes early archaeological starts valuable.

Visa reality
2–4 / 5 · depends on eVisa eligibility
Indian passport holders may qualify for the official eVisa only when every current supporting-document condition is met; otherwise a sticker visa is required. A valid visa or residence permit from specified supporting jurisdictions is commonly central to eligibility, and it must remain valid on entry.
Run both travellers through the official eVisa eligibility questions before booking; never rely on an agent’s paraphrase.
If eligible, apply only at evisa.gov.tr and carry the qualifying supporting document, return ticket, hotel proof and funds.
If either traveller is ineligible, use the official sticker-visa route early and plan for appointments and document scrutiny.
Make sure names, passport numbers, arrival date and supporting-visa validity match exactly before payment.
Reddit pulse · anecdotal
Reddit feedback is most useful as a warning against assumptions: travellers regularly confuse holding a supporting visa with automatically meeting every eVisa condition. Sticker-visa reports emphasize appointments, complete finance/employment evidence and variable timing. Verify the official screen for each passport.
