Amsterdam
Canal-city arrival without a museum marathon
Four nights let Amsterdam feel like a place rather than an attraction queue. The plan holds one major museum day, one canal/neighbourhood day and one flexible outing to Zaanse Schans, Haarlem or Waterland. It deliberately avoids scheduling Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House back-to-back.
- Best base
- Museum Quarter, Oud-West or west canal edge. These areas balance walkability, tram access and quieter nights.
- Arriving
- Schiphol–Amsterdam Centraal by NS train; use the same contactless card to check in and out.
- Moving on
- Direct train to Delft, usually with an easy transfer or through service depending on timetable.
- Expected weather
- Typically 11–19°C, mild but breezy with quick showers.
- Getting around
- Walk, tram and ferry. Cycle only if confident in busy Dutch bicycle traffic; Waterland is gentler than the centre.
- Vegetarian reality
- Excellent vegan choice. Bakery glaze, pancakes and croquettes often contain egg; Dutch cheese needs vegetarian-rennet confirmation.
What makes the cut
- Jordaan, Nine Streets and canal belt
- Rijksmuseum at opening plus Vondelpark
- One canal or brown-café stop long enough to become a memory
- Zaanse Schans/Haarlem or Waterland cycling
Reserve ahead
Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House if desired. Keep the excursion day forecast-led.
