The proposition

Railways, lakes & alpine stillness

Switzerland is the purest scenery journey: lake steamers and cog railways, four unhurried nights above Lauterbrunnen, vineyard terraces over Lake Geneva, and three chances to meet the Matterhorn in clear light.

The most beautiful and the most expensive. The route stays calm by limiting bases and using rail as part of the experience. Choose it if the budget feels celebratory rather than stressful.

Zurich

The low-stakes rail gateway

Zurich is a bookend rather than a headline stop. The first night absorbs the flight; the final night places you close to the airport after Zermatt. This is enough for the Limmat, old town and one unhurried dinner without stealing time from the Alps.

Best base
Near Zürich HB or on a direct tram/rail line. Convenience matters more than a lake-view premium.
Arriving
Airport train to Zürich HB in roughly 10–15 minutes.
Moving on
Frequent direct trains to Lucerne; on the final stay, use the direct airport train.
Expected weather
About 10–21°C with pleasant afternoons and cool evenings.
Getting around
Walk and tram. Use the SBB Mobile app for live platforms and pass validity.
Vegetarian reality
Easy vegan choice and excellent supermarkets. Use the city to buy mountain-day provisions.

What makes the cut

  • Limmat and old town on arrival
  • A calm final dinner and repacking night

Reserve ahead

Nothing beyond the hotel unless a specific museum is essential.

Chapel Bridge in Lucerne02 / 05

3 nights

Lucerne

Lake light, cog railways and the machinery chapter

Lucerne is the ideal first proper base: compact old town, a lake steamer at the station and easy access to Rigi. Three nights support one mountain loop and one full Swiss Museum of Transport day without constantly checking out.

Best base
Station/lake edge or old-town fringe. Avoid dragging luggage deep into pedestrian lanes for only a view upgrade.
Arriving
Direct train from Zurich in about 45–60 minutes.
Moving on
Train via Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen, then mountain railway to Wengen. Sit for the landscape, not just the transfer.
Expected weather
About 10–21°C; lake showers and cooler mountain air on Rigi.
Getting around
Boat, rail and walking. Check whether Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass covers each segment and mountain discount.
Vegetarian reality
City choice is good. On Rigi, carry lunch rather than relying on a mountain restaurant menu.

What makes the cut

  • Chapel Bridge and old town
  • Boat + cog railway Rigi loop
  • Swiss Museum of Transport

Reserve ahead

Swiss Museum of Transport if a special exhibit matters; Rigi can remain weather-flexible.

Your days here

D3 · Mon 14 SepLake-city beginning

Short train, Chapel Bridge, old town and waterfront.

D4 · Tue 15 SepRigi loop

D5 · Wed 16 SepHow Switzerland moves

Wengen above the Lauterbrunnen valley03 / 05

4 nights

Wengen & Lauterbrunnen

The longest stay and the reason for the trip

Four nights in car-free Wengen buy what mountain travel needs: two possible high-weather windows and one day that can become almost anything. Lauterbrunnen valley, Männlichen and Jungfraujoch/Grindelwald should not be locked into a rigid order months ahead; the evening forecast selects the next morning.

Best base
Central Wengen within a manageable walk of the station. Confirm whether the hotel collects luggage on steep lanes.
Arriving
Scenic rail from Lucerne via Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is reached only by mountain railway.
Moving on
Descend to Lauterbrunnen/Interlaken, then take the GoldenPass route toward Montreux. Reserve panorama seats if desired.
Expected weather
Wengen village about 5–16°C; high stations can be below freezing with snow and severe wind chill.
Getting around
Railways, cableways and walking. Check lift/path operations daily; September maintenance or early weather closures are possible.
Vegetarian reality
Research restaurants before arrival and use Coop in Lauterbrunnen/Wengen. Breakfast inclusion has more value here than in cities.

What makes the cut

  • Lauterbrunnen valley and waterfalls
  • Männlichen panorama walk in clear weather
  • Jungfraujoch or Grindelwald on the best mountain day
  • One village day with no expensive lift

Reserve ahead

Cancellable Wengen hotel first. Jungfraujoch and high lifts should wait for a credible forecast unless flexible fares are available.

Your days here

D6 · Thu 17 SepAbove the valley

Rail via Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen; settle into the car-free village.

D7 · Fri 18 SepLauterbrunnen floor

D8 · Sat 19 SepMännlichen panorama

Walk toward Kleine Scheidegg only if high paths and visibility are good.

D9 · Sun 20 SepThe weather-buffer day

Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald or a long village lunch—let the sky decide.

A Swiss lake and mountains04 / 05

2 nights

Montreux & Lavaux

French-speaking lake light and vineyard countryside

Montreux is the soft transition between the Bernese Oberland and Zermatt. The GoldenPass arrival is part of the experience; the full day belongs to the Lavaux terraces, with Chillon fitting naturally before the train to Zermatt.

Best base
Near Montreux station or lakeside within easy luggage distance. A balcony is lovely but not worth a steep transfer.
Arriving
GoldenPass route from Interlaken area. Check whether a reservation is needed for the chosen panoramic service.
Moving on
Visit Chillon in the morning, collect bags, then rail via Visp toward Zermatt.
Expected weather
About 11–21°C beside the lake; vineyards can feel warm in sun and exposed in rain.
Getting around
Train, local bus and walking. Lavaux works as a series of short rail-and-walk segments rather than one heroic hike.
Vegetarian reality
Good city options, but vineyard villages have fewer late meals. Plan the return before dinner.

What makes the cut

  • GoldenPass arrival
  • Montreux promenade
  • Lavaux vineyard villages and lake views
  • Chillon before Zermatt

Reserve ahead

GoldenPass panorama seat if desired; Chillon can usually be straightforward.

Your days here

D10 · Mon 21 SepGoldenPass west

Panoramic rail to Lake Geneva; promenade at dusk.

D11 · Tue 22 SepLavaux terraces

Train and walk among vineyard villages; this is the countryside chapter.

The Matterhorn above Zermatt05 / 05

3 nights

Zermatt

Two Matterhorn chances and a car-free finale

Three nights are the minimum sensible Zermatt stay for this trip. The first full day takes the clearest morning for Gornergrat; the second becomes Sunnegga/Five Lakes, a lower walk or simply the village. The structure protects against arriving under cloud and leaving before ever seeing the Matterhorn.

Best base
Central village or Sunnegga side, within easy reach of station and lifts. Check the hotel’s electric-cart luggage collection.
Arriving
Rail via Visp to car-free Zermatt. The final ascent is part of the experience.
Moving on
Long but easy rail back to Zurich. Reserve enough time for a final hotel night rather than connecting directly to the flight.
Expected weather
Village about 4–16°C; Gornergrat and high walks can be below 0°C with snow or strong wind.
Getting around
Walk, electric bus and mountain railways. Choose the day from the live forecast and trail status.
Vegetarian reality
Choice exists but is expensive. A room with kettle/fridge and Coop access meaningfully reduces both cost and stress.

What makes the cut

  • Gornergrat on the clearest morning
  • Sunnegga / Five Lakes if open and safe
  • Old village and a low-altitude bad-weather day
  • Two sunrise/sunset chances from the village

Reserve ahead

Cancellable hotel. Buy high-mountain transport to match the visibility window where possible.

Your days here

D12 · Wed 23 SepCastle to mountain

D13 · Thu 24 SepGornergrat window

Visa reality

3 / 5 · Familiar Schengen, expensive stakes

Apply for a Swiss Schengen visa through VFS India. Switzerland is the clear main destination and the route is easy to document.

  1. Apply as early as the six-month rule allows; target April–May rather than peak summer.
  2. Prepare itinerary, transport plan, cancellable hotels, insurance, funds and employment/business evidence.
  3. Adult fee is around ₹9,400 per person plus VFS and insurance.
  4. Normal processing is often around 15 calendar days but can extend.
Reddit pulse · anecdotal

The useful India-specific Reddit sample is tiny and contradictory: one couple credits a clean cover letter, NOC, ITRs and bank evidence for approval in roughly a week; another describes refusal and an expensive appeal. The lesson is file clarity, not a predicted outcome.

Official visa route ↗

Pure vegetarian · no egg

Carry the sentence.

We are strict vegetarians and do not eat eggs. No meat, fish, animal stock, gelatine or animal rennet. Dairy is okay.

Ask “ohne Ei” in German-speaking areas and “sans œuf” around Montreux.
  • Cities are manageable; Wengen and Zermatt require restaurant research before arrival.
  • Swiss hard cheeses may use animal rennet. Choose explicitly vegetarian-rennet cheese or vegan dishes.
  • Apartment-style rooms or a kettle/fridge reduce cost and food risk.
  • Migros and Coop are essential planning tools, not a compromise.
