Tokyo gateway
A familiar doorway, not a repeated holiday
Tokyo appears only to make the route work. The first night absorbs the Haneda arrival and gives you T’s Tantan; the final Narita night protects a separate Sapporo–Narita ticket from the 09:30 international flight. No repeat Tokyo sightseeing is needed.
Best base
Near Tokyo Station on arrival; at or very near Narita Airport on 9 November.
Arriving
Haneda to Tokyo Station area after the 15:05 arrival. Keep dinner and check-in simple.
Moving on
Hayabusa Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai; on the final day use the hotel shuttle/walk to the correct Narita terminal.

Sendai
Bay islands and the first autumn climb
Sendai is a transport-efficient opening to Tohoku. Matsushima fits the arrival afternoon from Tokyo, while Yamadera receives its own day so the stone climb is never squeezed between trains. The station area also provides the best chance to refine food supplies before rural Aizu.
Best base
At Sendai Station. It materially improves both day trips and the departure via Koriyama.
Arriving
Hayabusa from Tokyo takes about 90 minutes. Drop bags before continuing to Matsushima if energy and daylight allow.
Moving on
Shinkansen to Koriyama, then local rail to Aizuwakamatsu. Reserve the long sector and check luggage handling.
Expected weather
Roughly 8–20°C, cooler on Yamadera steps and after sunset.
Getting around
JR for Matsushima and Yamadera. Wear grippy shoes; the temple climb is steep and can be damp.

Aizuwakamatsu
Samurai country and a rural post town
Aizu provides the historical texture that a repeat Japan trip needs: a castle town, garden and old commercial street, followed by Ouchi-juku’s thatched post-town landscape. The stay is short but operationally delicate because the rural bus and private-rail timetables are limited.
Best base
Near Aizuwakamatsu Station for the bus/rail departure network, even if the castle district is prettier.
Arriving
Rail from Sendai via Koriyama. Drop bags before using the local loop bus for Tsuruga Castle.
Moving on
Travel toward Ichinoseki/Hiraizumi and onward to Morioka. Avoid creating a one-night luggage stop between them.
Expected weather
About 5–17°C, with cold mornings and a higher chance of mountain chill.
Getting around
Local loop bus in town; Aizu Railway and bus for Ouchi-juku. Save the last return timetable offline.

Morioka
A stable base for three very different landscapes
Morioka is deliberately a three-night base rather than a series of one-night moves. Hiraizumi can be visited on the way in; Geibikei becomes the weather day; Kakunodate is the full historical excursion. The stable hotel also gives a better chance to request a Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi visit without creating route chaos.
Best base
Immediately around Morioka Station. The bus, Shinkansen and food convenience outweigh a more atmospheric outer neighbourhood.
Arriving
Visit Hiraizumi while travelling north if luggage lockers/forwarding are secure, then continue to the same Morioka hotel.
Moving on
Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori. Reserve around the Culture Day travel period.
Expected weather
Roughly 4–15°C; gorge and lake areas feel colder, especially on water.
Getting around
JR and local bus. Rural connections are infrequent, so each day needs one primary excursion and a saved last departure.

Aomori combines an easy waterfront arrival, Hirosaki on Culture Day and one deliberately flexible nature day. Oirase and Lake Towada are not guaranteed to be at peak colour on 4 November; weather and the live foliage report decide whether to go, substitute Hakkoda or deepen Hirosaki/Aomori.

Central Aomori with straightforward bus access; verify whether station or Shin-Aomori transfer matters for the chosen hotel.
Arriving
Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori, then local transfer. Keep the first afternoon to WA RASSE and the waterfront.

Hakodate changes the mood from forest and samurai country to a port city shaped by foreign trade. The first evening moves through Motomachi and the red-brick warehouses toward the mountain view; the full day belongs to Onuma if conditions allow.

Near Hakodate Station or the tram corridor between the station and Motomachi.
