Japan again, but nothing repeated: Tokyo is only a gateway sleep. The journey follows late autumn north through temple mountains, samurai country, gorge boats, forest streams and Hokkaido’s first winter light.
The emotional winner. It preserves what you love about Japan while avoiding Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kawaguchiko and Hiroshima. The trade-offs are cold-weather uncertainty and much harder strict-vegetarian planning outside the Golden Route.

01 / 07
1 arrival + 1 airport night
Tokyo gateway
A familiar doorway, not a repeated holiday
Tokyo appears only to make the route work. The first night absorbs the Haneda arrival and gives you T’s Tantan; the final Narita night protects a separate Sapporo–Narita ticket from the 09:30 international flight. No repeat Tokyo sightseeing is needed.
Best base
Near Tokyo Station on arrival; at or very near Narita Airport on 9 November.
Arriving
Haneda to Tokyo Station area after the 15:05 arrival. Keep dinner and check-in simple.
Moving on
Hayabusa Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai; on the final day use the hotel shuttle/walk to the correct Narita terminal.
Expected weather
Tokyo about 11–20°C; Narita similar but cooler early morning.
Getting around
Rail only. The gateway nights should not create extra metro complexity.
Vegetarian reality
Use T’s Tantan and buy northern-Japan backup food before leaving the capital.
What makes the cut
A favourite vegan dinner rather than repeat sightseeing
Station food and provisions for Tohoku
Protected Narita sleep before the return
Reserve ahead
Narita airport hotel is non-negotiable. Reserve the Hayabusa once the rail plan is final.

Sendai
Bay islands and the first autumn climb
Sendai is a transport-efficient opening to Tohoku. Matsushima fits the arrival afternoon from Tokyo, while Yamadera receives its own day so the stone climb is never squeezed between trains. The station area also provides the best chance to refine food supplies before rural Aizu.
Best base
At Sendai Station. It materially improves both day trips and the departure via Koriyama.
Arriving
Hayabusa from Tokyo takes about 90 minutes. Drop bags before continuing to Matsushima if energy and daylight allow.
Moving on
Shinkansen to Koriyama, then local rail to Aizuwakamatsu. Reserve the long sector and check luggage handling.
Expected weather
Roughly 8–20°C, cooler on Yamadera steps and after sunset.
Getting around
JR for Matsushima and Yamadera. Wear grippy shoes; the temple climb is steep and can be damp.
Vegetarian reality
Sendai has some vegan/macrobiotic cafés, but hours need checking. Avoid assuming soba broth is vegetarian.
What makes the cut
Matsushima, Zuiganji and Entsuin
Yamadera early enough to avoid the final return rush
Zuihoden only if time and energy remain
Reserve ahead
Long-distance trains; most temple visits can remain flexible.
Your days here

Aizuwakamatsu
Samurai country and a rural post town
Aizu provides the historical texture that a repeat Japan trip needs: a castle town, garden and old commercial street, followed by Ouchi-juku’s thatched post-town landscape. The stay is short but operationally delicate because the rural bus and private-rail timetables are limited.
Best base
Near Aizuwakamatsu Station for the bus/rail departure network, even if the castle district is prettier.
Arriving
Rail from Sendai via Koriyama. Drop bags before using the local loop bus for Tsuruga Castle.
Moving on
Travel toward Ichinoseki/Hiraizumi and onward to Morioka. Avoid creating a one-night luggage stop between them.
Expected weather
About 5–17°C, with cold mornings and a higher chance of mountain chill.
Getting around
Local loop bus in town; Aizu Railway and bus for Ouchi-juku. Save the last return timetable offline.
Vegetarian reality
This is one of the harder food bases. Book a known vegetarian meal, use convenience-store labels carefully and carry a complete backup dinner.
What makes the cut
Tsuruga Castle and Oyakuen Garden
Nanukamachi historic street
Ouchi-juku and Tonohetsuri if transport aligns
Reserve ahead
Ouchi-juku bus/rail plan once the autumn timetable is published.
Your days here

Morioka
A stable base for three very different landscapes
Morioka is deliberately a three-night base rather than a series of one-night moves. Hiraizumi can be visited on the way in; Geibikei becomes the weather day; Kakunodate is the full historical excursion. The stable hotel also gives a better chance to request a Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi visit without creating route chaos.
Best base
Immediately around Morioka Station. The bus, Shinkansen and food convenience outweigh a more atmospheric outer neighbourhood.
Arriving
Visit Hiraizumi while travelling north if luggage lockers/forwarding are secure, then continue to the same Morioka hotel.
Moving on
Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori. Reserve around the Culture Day travel period.
Expected weather
Roughly 4–15°C; gorge and lake areas feel colder, especially on water.
Getting around
JR and local bus. Rural connections are infrequent, so each day needs one primary excursion and a saved last departure.
Vegetarian reality
Morioka is easier than the day-trip areas. Use station supermarkets for packed lunches; traditional noodles still require broth checks.
What makes the cut
Hiraizumi’s Chusonji and Motsuji
Geibikei Gorge boat in suitable weather
Kakunodate’s samurai district
Optional Grand Seiko precision-craft visit
Reserve ahead
Geibikei boat if timing requires, and Grand Seiko only if a genuine public/confirmed tour slot exists.

Aomori
Nebuta culture and the most weather-sensitive forest day
Aomori combines an easy waterfront arrival, Hirosaki on Culture Day and one deliberately flexible nature day. Oirase and Lake Towada are not guaranteed to be at peak colour on 4 November; weather and the live foliage report decide whether to go, substitute Hakkoda or deepen Hirosaki/Aomori.
Best base
Central Aomori with straightforward bus access; verify whether station or Shin-Aomori transfer matters for the chosen hotel.
Arriving
Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori, then local transfer. Keep the first afternoon to WA RASSE and the waterfront.
Moving on
Shinkansen through the Seikan Tunnel to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, then local connection to Hakodate.
Expected weather
About 3–13°C; rain, wind and cold stream conditions are possible.
Getting around
Rail for Hirosaki; seasonal bus or tour for Oirase/Towada. Confirm final 2026 operations and last return.
Vegetarian reality
Carry a packed lunch for Oirase. Aomori seafood culture makes dedicated vegan research important.
What makes the cut
WA RASSE Nebuta Museum and waterfront
Hirosaki Castle Park on 3 November
Oirase Stream only if forecast and foliage justify it
Hakkoda or a second Hirosaki day as the honest fallback
Reserve ahead
Culture Day trains and Oirase transport once schedules publish. Do not lock a costly non-refundable foliage tour early.

Hakodate
The luminous hinge between Tohoku and Hokkaido
Hakodate changes the mood from forest and samurai country to a port city shaped by foreign trade. The first evening moves through Motomachi and the red-brick warehouses toward the mountain view; the full day belongs to Onuma if conditions allow.
Best base
Near Hakodate Station or the tram corridor between the station and Motomachi.
Arriving
Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, then the Hakodate Liner. Check the mountain visibility before committing to the ropeway.
Moving on
Limited Express Hokuto to Sapporo takes roughly 3h40–4h. Reserve seats and carry lunch.
Expected weather
About 3–12°C with strong wind possible after dark.
Getting around
Tram and walking in town; JR to Onuma. The slopes around Motomachi are more tiring than the map suggests.
Vegetarian reality
Seafood dominates. Save two verified restaurants and carry breakfast/rail food.
What makes the cut
Motomachi and red-brick warehouses
Mount Hakodate only with clear visibility
Onuma lake walks as the full-day excursion
Reserve ahead
Limited Express seats. Ropeway can stay visibility-dependent.

Sapporo
The first-winter finale
Sapporo closes the trip with a genuinely different urban Japan: broad streets, cold air, stronger vegan choice and an easy Otaru excursion. The stay is brief because a separate domestic flight and Narita buffer are protected on 9 November.
Best base
Sapporo Station/Odori corridor, convenient for Otaru and the airport train.
Arriving
Limited Express from Hakodate. Keep the first afternoon central and warm.
Moving on
Morning flight CTS–NRT with checked baggage. The Narita airport night removes all same-day self-connect risk.
Expected weather
Approximately -1–10°C; early snow, icy mornings and sharp wind are possible.
Getting around
Subway and walking; JR to Otaru and New Chitose. Choose footwear for wet or icy pavement.
Vegetarian reality
Sapporo has the best northern vegan selection. Use it for one celebratory meal and to restock the flight day.
What makes the cut
Odori, Clock Tower and Susukino
Otaru canal and glass workshops
Mt Tengu only with visibility and safe surfaces
Reserve ahead

The journey follows autumn into winter. Sendai can still feel mild at midday; Hokkaido can fall below freezing and may see its first snow. Foliage timing is reasoned from history, never guaranteed.
Sendai & Aizu
About 8–20°C early, trending colder; mountain mornings can approach 3–5°C.
Morioka & Aomori
Roughly 4–15°C; rain, wind and cold gorge conditions possible.

Visa reality
4 / 5 · Low fee, orderly file
Indian nationals use Japan’s VFS/eVisa route for short-term tourism. The file is familiar and the fee is low, but the digital issuance notice has a specific display requirement.
Apply in early to mid-September with three to four weeks of margin.
Prepare passport, form/photo, daily schedule, reservations, bank statements, ITR and employment/business evidence.
From 1 Apr 2026: ₹500 visa fee + ₹800 VFS service charge per applicant in Bengaluru.
Display the eVisa issuance notice dynamically on a phone at travel; screenshots or printouts are not accepted.
Reddit pulse · anecdotal
Recent India-focused Reddit threads generally describe Japan as one of the smoother files when the schedule, funds and employment documents are coherent. The recurring warning is administrative rather than discretionary: follow the checklist exactly and understand how to display the eVisa notice.
