Rome
The monumental opening—and the protected final landing
Rome is split into two stays for a reason. The first four nights absorb jet lag while you meet the city in layers: piazzas and fountains first, then the Vatican, then Ancient Rome. The final two nights remove the anxiety of driving directly from Tuscany to a long-haul flight. The city is intense but highly walkable when each morning has one timed anchor and the rest of the day stays neighbourhood-sized.
Best base
Termini is practical for the airport and both intercity trains; Monti is more atmospheric. If staying by Termini, request a quiet rear-facing room and walk toward Monti for dinner rather than hanging around the station frontage.
Arriving
FCO to Termini on the Leonardo Express takes about 32 minutes. Buy from Trenitalia, validate if required, and allow time for the terminal walk.
Moving on
Rome–Naples is 55–70 minutes by Frecciarossa or Italo. On the final stay, leave central Rome around 18:00 for the 22:00 Etihad departure.
Expected weather
Late October about 11–21°C; early November closer to 7–16°C. Showers are plausible and sunset is around 17:00 after the clock change.
Getting around
Walk the historic centre; use Metro A for the Vatican and a taxi when tired. Do not try to combine the Vatican and Colosseum on one day.
Vegetarian reality
Rome has excellent vegan restaurants, pizza rossa, carciofi and dried-pasta dishes. Still ask about egg in fresh pasta, meat stock in soups and animal rennet in cheese.

Naples
The food chapter that should not be shortened
Naples is not merely a base for Pompeii. Four nights allow its historic centre, metro art, waterfront and pizza culture to become a real part of the trip. It is noisier, scruffier and more alive than Rome or Florence. Base near Dante or Piazza Bellini so that the old city is outside the door without making the station area your evening environment.
Best base
Dante/Bellini is the best balance for first-timers: walkable to Spaccanapoli, connected by Metro Line 1 and easier at night than the immediate Napoli Centrale surroundings.
Arriving
Fast train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then Metro Line 1 or a licensed taxi. Keep bags closed and use normal big-city awareness.
Moving on
Direct high-speed trains reach Florence in roughly 2h42. A late-morning departure preserves a final breakfast and avoids a predawn rush.
Expected weather
Usually 13–21°C with milder evenings than inland Italy. Wind and sea conditions can disrupt ferries and coast excursions.
Getting around
Walk the historic centre, use Line 1 for Toledo/Vomero and take Circumvesuviana or Campania Express for Pompeii. Do not rent a car here.
Vegetarian reality
Marinara is the safest joy: tomato, garlic, oregano and olive oil, naturally dairy- and egg-free. Margherita is eggless but uses cheese; ask about rennet if important. Fried snacks may share oil.

Florence
A concentrated Renaissance chapter
Florence is compact enough for three carefully arranged nights. The route deliberately arrives on Sunday and uses Monday for architecture, churches and Oltrarno because the Uffizi and Accademia are normally closed. Tuesday becomes the focused gallery day. This avoids the common mistake of stacking Uffizi, Accademia, Duomo climb and every church into one exhausting checklist.
Best base
The Santa Maria Novella edge is easiest with luggage and for collecting a rental car outside the centre. The Duomo side is prettier but less convenient for transfers.
Arriving
Walk or take a short taxi from Firenze Santa Maria Novella. The centre is a controlled-traffic zone; do not collect the Tuscany car until departure day.
Moving on
Collect the car at Florence airport or another ZTL-safe peripheral office. Confirm automatic transmission, full-cover terms and the one-way FCO fee.
Expected weather
Approximately 7–17°C with cool, humid evenings and a meaningful chance of rain. Museum queues feel longer in wet weather.
Getting around
Entirely on foot in the centre. Keep one bridge crossing into Oltrarno as a pressure release from museum density.
Vegetarian reality
Ribollita and pappa al pomodoro can be vegetarian but must be checked for meat stock. Fresh pasta may contain egg; schiacciata may use lard at traditional bakeries.

Val d’Orcia
The countryside chapter—not a rushed Florence excursion
This is where the itinerary finally exhales. Three rural nights near Pienza give you two full days for cypress roads, small Renaissance towns, olive-oil season and long lunches. The point is not to visit every hill town; it is to have time for changing light, a farm stop and a road chosen simply because it looks beautiful. Siena sits naturally on the drive in, while Orvieto can break the return to Rome.
Best base
Choose an agriturismo within 15–25 minutes of Pienza and confirm heating, parking and dinner. A Pienza hotel is more walkable; a rural relais is more immersive.
Arriving
Drive from Florence via Siena. Use signed peripheral parking and reach the agriturismo before dark; narrow rural roads are much less pleasant after sunset.
Moving on
Drive toward FCO with an optional Orvieto stop. Return the car at the airport to avoid central-Rome ZTLs, then take the train into town.
Expected weather
Roughly 5–15°C. Mist, light rain and cold evenings are common; daylight ends close to 17:00.
Getting around
A car is essential. Plan one compact geographic loop per day and stop driving well before dinner. Never follow a navigation app blindly into a ZTL.
Vegetarian reality
Rural menus are meat-heavy and opening hours shrink in November. Obtain a written no-egg vegetarian dinner confirmation and keep bread, fruit, cheese with suitable rennet and snacks in the car.
