Iceland is not presented as an easy autumn Ring Road. This is a deliberately conservative southwest-and-south-coast route with four Reykjavík nights, double nights in exposed regions, no northern sector and a final Keflavík buffer. Every scenic day has a weather-safe alternative or permission to stop.
Choose Iceland for elemental landscapes and the possibility of aurora, not for certainty. It is one of the most expensive options and carries the highest weather risk. The itinerary works only if road closures are accepted immediately, daylight is respected and no non-refundable activity is allowed to bully the forecast.

Four warm nights for the first weather decision
Reykjavík is the control room. A midnight arrival is followed by a car-free recovery day, then two flexible days that can hold Reykjanes, a pool, Perlan or nothing beyond the city. Collecting the car only after sleep avoids beginning a winter road trip tired and in darkness.
Best base
Centre or Hlemmur for walkability, vegan choice and tour pickup. Parking is unnecessary until the car is collected.
Arriving
Use a booked Flybus or private transfer from Keflavík. Do not collect an unfamiliar vehicle at 23:25.
Moving on
Check road.is/umferdin, SafeTravel and the Met Office before driving south. Leave only with a safe daylight window.

Getting around
Walk, use city buses and collect the appropriate rental car later. A 4WD is not permission to ignore closures.

Three nights in Vík let the south coast unfold across arrival day, one exposed-coast day and one complete weather reserve. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are visited in daylight; no waterfall path or beach is worth defying an ice or sneaker-wave warning.

Vík village for food, fuel and a short walk back to the room. Confirm breakfast and late-arrival policy.
Arriving
Drive from Reykjavík in daylight, stopping only where parking and paths are officially open.
Moving on
Continue east toward the glacier lagoon after the morning road and wind check. The sandur offers little shelter.

The farthest point, reached once and slowly
Two nights near Jökulsárlón remove the punishing Reykjavík out-and-back. The transfer passes lava fields, glacial rivers and Skaftafell; the full middle day can wait for safer light at the lagoon and Diamond Beach.
Best base
The lagoon corridor first, Höfn second. A cheaper distant room can add dangerous dark driving and is not truly cheaper.
Arriving
Drive from Vík entirely in daylight, with fuel and food. Stop immediately if crosswind, visibility or road surface deteriorates.
Moving on
Retrace west toward Selfoss or Flúðir. This is a long road day and receives no attraction quota.

A famous loop slowed to winter daylight
The Golden Circle is given two nights because arriving from the glacier lagoon is already a long drive. Only the next day carries sights, and even then two of the three headline stops are enough if roads or light run short.

Selfoss for services or Flúðir for a rural base. Confirm food and fuel access after seasonal closing times.
Arriving
Drive west from the lagoon region with no waterfall detours unless time and weather are unusually generous.
Moving on
Head toward Snæfellsnes only if the peninsula forecast is safe; Reykjavík is the fallback.

Three nights make Snæfellsnes feasible at winter pace: one arrival, one loop, one second chance. The entire chapter is conditional. If gale, snow or road advice turns against it, those nights should move to Reykjavík and nearby safe excursions without regret.

Stykkishólmur for services or Grundarfjörður for Kirkjufell access. Use one base only.
Arriving
Drive from the Golden Circle or Reykjavík after checking every road segment. Arrive before darkness.
